WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO IN AMSTERDAMThe best way to see Amsterdam and its unique architecture is a trip on a canal boat. Most of the main attractions are located within the historical core. The Damrak is the main street; the oldest area of the town is known as de Wallen and it lies to the east of Damrak and contains the city's famous red light district. To the south of de Wallen is the old Jewish quarter of Waterlooplein. In the eart of the Wallen you can find the oldest building in Amsterdam, the Oude Kerk.
The Rijksmuseum, one of the ten principal museums in the world and famous for its collection of Netherlandish paintings as Rembrandt's Nightwatch, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank Museum, in the house where Anne Frank hid from the Nazis for over two years, should not be missed. Amsterdam has a varied architectural history: gothic, renaissance, baroque, art nouveau, art deco and modern. Of course, there are museums dedicated to the liberal nature of the city: the Sex museum and the Cannabis museum.
GETTING THEREAmsterdam's Schiphol Airport is 15km southwest of the city, an express train service connects it to Centraal Station. In Centraal Station, Stationsplein, arrive all the main trains from Europe. In Amstelstation, 3.5km southeast of the city centre, arrive the buses, connected to entraal Station via metro.
GETTING AROUNDOn foot and by bycicle are the most enjoyable way to visit the city. There are efficient tram, metro, bus and ferry services. A free ferry service provides cyclists and pedestrians with connections to Amsterdam Noord. The Metro has 4 lines and serves the southeastern business district and the suburbs.
