MILAN OVERVIEW

Milan is the second largest city of Italy, situated in the north of the country. It's the economic and fashion capital of Italy, considered one of the most cool city of the world.

The word Milan derives from the ancient Latin name of the city, Mediolanum. The foundation of the city is credited to two Celtic peoples, the Bituriges and the Aedui, having as their emblems a ram and a boar; therefore the city's symbol is a wool-bearing boar, an animal of double form, here with sharp bristles, there with sleek wool.

In 222 BC, the Romans conquered this settlement and later was declared the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Visigoths, Huns, Ostrogoths, Longobards, Franks, Holy Roman Empire: Milan has a long conquests history.

Milan was one of the leading cities of the Italian Renaissance.

In XVIII century the Spanish conquered the city. The Great Plague of Milan in 1629-31 killed an estimated 60,000 people out of a population of 130,000.

Milan is the base of operations for the most important nationwide communication services and businesses, such as newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations.

The regional cousine is well known for its risotto, cotoletta alla milanese, cassoeula.

Milan is undergoing an urban re-design. Milan will host Expo 2015 as a renewed city in the wake of this modernization.
