Naples is the capital of the region of Campania, in the south-west of Italy.

It's located halfway between two volcanic areas, the volcano Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields.

Naples is a city on the sea, on the magnificent Gulf of Naples, a sunny and easy-going city but with hidden foundations (a hidden, submerged, underground world) and some dark episodes nowadays.

Founded by the Ancient Greeks as Neápolis, it held an important role in Magna Graecia and then as part of the Roman Republic.

In Naples you can taste the original Pizza and the best pastry of Italy (sfogliatelle, pastiera), and know the most folkloristic aspect of Italy, known in all the world thanks to hundreds of films, singers and famous neapolitans. It has a strong musical, theatre and opera tradition. Naples is well known as the birthplace of the Camorra and for the security and garbage problem, but the city is not so dangerous as the media tell.

Naples is the perfect place to stay to reach the main fabulous islands of the Gulf as Capri and Ischia, and to visit the archeological sites of Pompei and Ercolano.

The best place for an amazing Naples landscape is Castel Sant'Elmo. From here, you can enjoy the spectacular setting on the Bay of Naples and the powerful presence of the Mount Vesuvius.

Naples' Capodichino Airport is 8km from the city centre. The 'Alibus' connects it with the city centre, stopping at Piazza Garibaldi and at Piazza Municipio.

The main train station is in Piazza Garibaldi, the Stazione Napoli Centrale. A lot of cruises stop in Naples port.

Some places are reachable by funicolars.

There are two Metro lines.

Bus and tram complite the wide but busy and chaotic public transport service.
