Kerkyra, Korkyra, Scheria, Faikas or whatever name you want use, is a Greek island, the second largest of the Ionian Islands, and it lies off the coast of Sarandë, Albania. The main city is Corfu. This island is strongly connected with the Greek history and its mythology. The myth tells that Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra, daughter of Asopus and river nymph Metope, and abducted her. He brought her to the hitherto unnamed island and, in marital bliss, offered her name to the place: Korkyra. Kerkyra remained in Venetian hands from 1401 till 1797 and we can still find important remains of it. During the Second World War it was occupied by the Italians and, upon the fall of Italian fascism in 1943, the Nazis moved to take control of the island: Corfu was bombarded and the holocaust started. Corfu contains a few very important remains of antiquity and Italianate architecture. With its 217 kilometres of costs and the landmarks of the past, it's the perfect destination for everykind of tourists. ![]() Photo: mickpix More photos of Corfu?
